Professor John Durham Peters
John Durham Peters holds the position of A. Craig Baird Professor of the Department of Communications Studies at University of Iowa. He received his B.A. in English, M.A. in Speech Communication from the University of Utah, and his Ph.D in Communication Theory and Research from Stanford University. He is interested in media and cultural history, researches using communication and social theory and wide range of philosophical, historical, religious, and technological context. He received fellowships with the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Fulbright Foundation, and the Leverhulme Trust. Last year, he published the article “Mormonism and Media” in The Oxford Handbook of Mormonism (Oxford University Press, 2015). His popular books includes Speaking into the Air: A History of the Idea of Communication (1999) and the most recent one is The Marvelous Clouds: Towards a Philosophy of Elemental Media (2015). John is currently preparing for his book project Promiscuous Knowledge: The Information Age in Historical Perspective (with Kenneth Cmiel).
