Brigham Young Univeristy Hawai‘i
Brigham Young University Hawai‘i is located at Laie, 35 miles north of Honolulu on the island of Oahu. The 100-acre campus is nestled between mountains and shoreline. It is an undergraduate university with an enrollment of approximately 2,500 students who represent over 70 different countries and cultures from the Pacific Rim, the U.S. mainland, Asia, Europe, and other parts of the world.
The David O. McKay Foyer
The David O. McKay Foyer is a historical site for Brigham Young University Hawai‘i. Elder David O. McKay attended a flag-raising in Laie in 1921 and envisioned a school to make Laie the LDS Church's spiritual and educational center in the Pacific. In 1951, McKay became the president of the Church and started preliminary work to establish the university in Laie that he foresaw. Now the foyer is the home of the College of Language, Culture, and Arts and the David O. McKay Center for Intercultural Understanding.
The Laie Community
The quiet community of Laie lies at the edge of the ocean, against a backdrop of green mountains and misty valleys. The town basks in abundant sun, while cooling trade winds and the gentle sound of lapping tides complete an atmosphere of peace and tranquility. Residents are warm and welcoming, always vigilant for one another’s well-being (words from BYUH website).
The Laie Temple Visitors' Center and the Polynesian Cultural Center are popular attractions adjacent to the University. Laie is also in the proximity of the world-famous beaches of the North Shore, such as Sunset Beach, Shark’s Cove, Waimea Bay, etc.
